A suspect was injured during a shootout with police on Govan Mbeki Road in Cape Town.

The incident happened on Sunday evening when police tried to stop a vehicle linked to a recent business robbery.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said: “Officers saw the suspects’ vehicle and tried to stop it. The suspects shot at the police to escape.”

He said two adults were arrested, and one suspect, who was injured during the shootout, is now under guard at a hospital.

The suspects face charges of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged.

A resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “The suspects were trying to escape when SAPS saw them. When the police asked them to stop, they refused and started shooting.”

Another local, Mzwandile Mzameni, praised the police for their recent actions against crime.

“Since last month, SAPS and other law enforcement agencies have been doing a great job. I don’t feel sorry for criminals, and SAPS should keep defending themselves.”
