Six people, including a police diver, have been killed in flash flooding in the Eastern Cape in different incidents.

Police diver Captain Pierre Marx died conducting rescue and recovery operations.

Rains hit the province hard on Saturday and low lying areas were severely flooded within hours.

The Eastern Cape premier’s office said that Mdantsane township outside East London and Duncan village were the worst hit.

“Scores of families are displaced and some roads completely submerged making access to distressed communities that much more difficult,” the office said in a statement.

The Buffalo City Metro has since deployed disaster management services to the affected areas.

The South African Weather Service issued warnings of heavy weather across the Northern and Western Cape on Sunday.

A level 2 warning for thunderstorms has been forecast from Pofadder to Calvinia, and right down to the Cape Agulhas.

Senior forecaster Luthando Masimini, quoted by EyeWitness News, said this was due to two big low-pressure systems moving over the regions, which may cause further flooding in vulnerable areas.
