Mpumalanga police caught seven robbery suspects after getting a tip-off about their planned attack in Thulamahashe.

The Mhala Crime Prevention Unit arrested the men, aged between 35 and 60, after finding two guns and 13 bullets in their cars.

Police received information about the armed gang planning robberies in the Mhala area.

The suspects were travelling in three vehicles on Mbumba Road towards Acornhoek.

When police tried to stop them, one driver made a U-turn and sped away. Officers managed to stop the other two cars and found the weapons during a search.

The seven men were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Police will test the guns to see if they were used in other crimes. More charges could follow as the investigation continues.

Police are urging anyone who was robbed by armed men in a blue or black VW Polo with Mpumalanga number plates to come forward.

The robberies might have happened in Acornhoek, Calcutta, Bushbuckridge, Hazyview, or nearby areas.

The suspects appeared in the Thulamahashe Magistrate’s Court on 5 February. They will apply for bail on 12 February.
