- Police caught a man trying to flee after allegedly killing two officers who were responding to a robbery.
- Two more suspects are still on the run with police asking the public for help finding them.
A man trying to escape to Lesotho after allegedly killing two police officers has been caught near the border.
The suspect was arrested at Horseback near Monontsha Port of Entry while trying to flee South Africa. Police say he was in the country illegally.
He is accused of killing Constable Sipho Mohapi and Constable Gedione Motloung on Saturday. The two officers were shot dead while responding to a house robbery in Phuthaditjhaba.
A team of elite police units worked together to catch him. These included the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the Tactical Response Team, the Provincial Organised Crime Unit and the Local Criminal Record Centre.

Hawks boss Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya praised the police team for their hard work. But the hunt isn’t over – two more suspects are still on the run.
Free State police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said they found important evidence on the suspect.
“He was found in possession of a cellphone which was stolen during the robbery and a gun we think was used to kill the officers.”
The man will appear at the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Friday. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery.
