Police arrested two men for extortion at different spaza shops in the Kosovo and Samora Machel townships.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Malcolm Pojie said the Anti-Economic Crime task team is working hard to stop extortion in the area by targeting those who carry out these crimes and terrorise communities.
“On Monday, 14 October 2024, at about 8am, police got information about five men with guns robbing spaza shops in the Kosovo and Samora Machel areas,” said Pojie.
Officers reacted quickly but were told by locals that the men had gone to Philippi to continue their activities.
“The police followed the suspects to Browns Farm and found two men, aged 20 and 22, carrying blue backpacks. They became nervous when they saw the officers,” Pojie said.
A search of the suspects revealed a plastic bag with coins and cigarettes, allegedly stolen from the shops they targeted.
The men then led police to two different houses in the Covid informal settlement in Mfuleni. At the first address, police found an assault rifle hidden under a mattress, and at the second, two illegal guns.
Both suspects were taken to Mfuleni SAPS and will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court after they are charged.
