Police boss arrested for stealing money

Lieutenant General Khumalo, who is in charge of crime intelligence for the South African Police Service, has been arrested.

He is accused of stealing money from a secret police fund and giving jobs to people who did not deserve them.

Just a few weeks ago, another top police officer, General Lushaba, was also arrested.

Police committee chairperson Ian Cameron confirmed Khumalo’s arrest on Thursday.

Several senior officers from the Crime Intelligence division have now been arrested. They include Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, Major General or Brigadier Ncube, Major General Gabela and Brigadier Madondo.

He said these arrests show there is something seriously wrong with the police leadership.

“Khumalo is facing big charges. We must check if the people in charge have the right skills and if they are honest,” said Cameron.

He also said there are many other police officers who have been arrested for serious crimes but are still working and getting paid.

He gave examples: a detective in Belhar caught with cocaine, a constable in Kuils River out on bail for rape, a Lentegeur officer who sold police files, and a Cape Town court officer caught with 900 mandrax pills.

“These officers are dangerous. They should not be wearing the police uniform,” he said.

Cameron said police bosses must act fast and remove these officers from the force.

“Police leaders must stop looking away. They must take action now,” he said.
