  • Pitso Mosimane says Bafana can win the 2027 Afcon after reaching the World Cup knockouts and 2023 Afcon semi-finals.
  • He says he does not want Hugo Broos’s job but believes South Africa are ready to lift the trophy.

Pitso Mosimane believes Bafana Bafana can win the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and end their long wait for another title.

South Africa last won Afcon in 1996.

Mosimane told Radio 2000 that Bafana’s recent results show they can challenge Africa’s best teams.

He said he was not trying to take Hugo Broos’s job. Broos’s contract ends at the end of July.

“Firstly, I don’t want coach Hugo Broos’s job. I want a job that is vacant,” Mosimane said. “I believe that we can win the Africa Cup of Nations.”

Bafana won bronze at the 2023 Afcon in Côte d’Ivoire and recently reached the Fifa World Cup knockout stages for the first time.

Mosimane said reaching the Afcon semi-finals showed Bafana were close to making the final.

“When you’re in the final, you might as well win it,” he said.

He also pointed to Mamelodi Sundowns winning the CAF Champions League as proof that South African football is growing.

“Senegal won it and we can win it too. Maybe it’s time,” he said.

Mosimane won the CAF Champions League with Sundowns in 2016. He later won it twice with Egyptian club Al-Ahly in 2020 and 2021.

Bafana begin their 2027 Afcon qualifying campaign in September against Kenya, Guinea and Eritrea.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will host the tournament.
