Pirates close the gap to 12 in Polokwane

Jose Riveiro’s farewell tour began with a hard fought victory at the Peter Mokaba Stadium when the Bucs defeated Polokwane City 1-0 on Saturday.

Named as “the last dance” by the club, which Riveiro has announced he would depart at the end of the season, the run-in certainly has the potential to be a special one.

Nkosinathi Sibisi got the only goal of the game. It may have been a scrappy one, as the ball went in off his knee shortly after the hour mark, but it certainly was an important one.

Despite the result, Riveiro was quick to express his disappointment at the playing conditions at the old ground.

“I think it’s always an ugly game when you play at the Old Peter Mokaba. The state of the field is terrible, slow, bumpy and not a football ground, so you have to find a way to not concede and be patient and wait for opportunities,” Riveiro told SuperSport post-match.

“We had a lot of quality and opportunities and this time our goal came from a set-pice. It’s a massive three points and I’m so happy to collect three points because not everyone can do it, against a very disciplined team that today was running an extra mile.”

While the deficit between Pirates and leaders Mamelodi Sundowns is down to 12 points, Riveiro’s side do still have three games in hand on the Brazilians.

With nine points up for grabs in those fixtures, there is definitely still a title race on the cards.
