Orlando Pirates got back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership when they beat Chippa United 1-0 at Orlando Stadium, in Soweto on Wednesday. Fortune Makaringe’s 86th goal took Bucs back to third place in the log standings.
The Chippa clash was the first match after Bucs’ MTN8 final triumph last weekend. Their fans watched the game to see whether or not the players were still hungover from their celebrations.
Ever tough Buccaneers faced stubborn Chillie Boys but they managed to get the job done and earn those three valuable points. They also managed a clean sheet, something they failed to do in their last three matches.
The win will surely bring a smile to the face of their coach Josef Zinnbauer who made it clear after winning his first trophy on Saturday that his next target is the league. Before the match Pirates were seven points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
They have now cut the deficit down to three points. The defeat on the other hand has inflicted more pain and pressure on Chippa coach Lehlohonolo Seema.
It has seen Chippa dropping further down on the log standings. They are now in 13th place with just five points after seven games.
Seema’s CV doesn’t make good reading for his boss Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi. On Wednesday Chippa lost his fourth match while only managing to win one and draw two.
Other coaches have been sacked by Mpengise with a better record than that. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Seema in the next coming days.
Time for Wednesday night matches were brought forward by 30 minutes to fit in with the new curfew regulations.
“In compliance with the regulations all night matches of the PSL will start at 7pm at the very latest and be completed on or before 9pm in the evening,” said the statement thats was sent out by the PSL.
On Tuesday President Cyril Ramaphosa, announced an extended curfew as part of the new regulations to address the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
