Pikitup has obtained an interdict against striking contract workers who began their protest last week, demanding permanent employment.

The strike disrupted operations at several depots, including Norwood, Selby, Marlboro, Randburg, and Diepsloot.

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said the strike affected 10 of 12 depots.

Senior management has been sent to these depots to engage with workers and enforce the “no work, no pay” rule on Tuesday, News24 reports.

“The owners of ad hoc fleets that were assisting the company with waste collection will be requested to provide compactor trucks and personnel to help clean the city and clear the waste backlog caused by the strike,” Mkhwanazi said.

An anonymous Pikitup worker expressed disappointment and frustration. She said she couldn’t apply for a Sassa grant for her grandchildren because she is permanently employed.

The woman said she started as a volunteer, earning R2,700 per month, and expected to be made permanent after three months, which has yet to happen.

If possible, Pikitup urged residents to dispose of their waste at its integrated waste management facilities.

Last week, the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union of South Africa’s general secretary, Meshack Ntshauba, told News24 that contract workers met with city leaders. The workers are demanding permanent employment, personal protective equipment, and an investigation into corruption allegations.
