Two pensioners, Daniel Madumo, 92, and Jeremia Mmatli, 75, who were both charged with the murder of a fellow pensioner, Godfrey Thema, 80, have died at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.
They died just four days apart.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed their deaths.
“Madumo was transferred to an outside hospital on 22 June due to health complications but sadly died on 24 June. Mmatli died on 20 June in custody,” he said.
The accused were expected to make their second appearance at the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The suspects were arrested at the Ipeleng Bagodi Old Age Home on 30 May in Jericho Village near Brits.
It is alleged that Madumo, Mmatli, and Thema fought. Thema was on his way from the bathroom when he met the two, who were on their way to the bathroom.
Thema allegedly bumped one of the suspects, who retaliated and hit the victim with his crutches. A friend reportedly joined in the assault.
North West police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda Funani said the facility’s owner called police and emergency personnel to the scene.
“The victim sustained head injuries and was transported to the hospital but was certified dead on arrival. The two suspects were arrested and charged with murder,” she said.
