  • The City of Johannesburg has extended approved pensioner rates rebates until 30 June 2027, so existing beneficiaries don’t need to reapply.
  • Pensioners earning below R13,519 a month can get a 100% rebate, while those aged 70 and older can qualify regardless of income.

The City of Johannesburg is calling on pensioners to apply for rates rebates on their properties, as part of its new Pensioners Legacy and Relief campaign.

The city has extended existing approved pensioner rebates until 30 June 2027. That means pensioners already receiving a reduction do not need to reapply.

During the 2025/26 financial year, 38,308 pensioners received property rates reductions worth a combined R329.8 million.

Pensioners aged 60 to 69 who earn below R13,519 a month before deductions qualify for a 100% rebate. Those earning between R13,519 and R23,172 can get a 50% reduction, on properties valued up to R1.5 million.

Pensioners aged 70 and older can qualify for a 100% discount on properties worth up to R2 million, regardless of income, provided they meet the city’s other requirements. Pensioners receiving social grants may also qualify for a 100% rebate.

New applicants, including pensioners who have recently turned 60 or have never applied before, still need to submit an application.

To apply, applicants must be the registered owner of the property and live there full time. Only one property per applicant can be covered by the rebate.

Applicants must clearly state their income on the application form, even if they also submit bank statements or SASSA documents. A certified South African ID and a signed application form are also required.
