With the elections just five weeks away, the DA is once again losing votes in black and coloured communities in the Western Cape.
By-election results continue to show that the Patriotic Alliance and other small coloured community-based parties are gaining traction in these communities.
Gayton McKenzie’s party recently won a by-election in George, while its coalition with regional parties in Plettenberg Bay resulted in the removal of the DA in the local Bitou Municipality.
During the by-elections on Wednesday, the PA beat the DA and ANC to win wards on the eve of the crucial national general election on 29 May.
In Swartland Ward 11, Western Cape, the PA got 40% of the vote while the DA vote shrunk by 10% to 39%.
The PA dominated the ward as the ANC also lost 18% of its support to record just 5% of the vote. The FF plus did not contest the ward.
It was a similar story in Oudtshoorn in Ward 9, Western Cape where the coloured community vote carried the PA to victory by 65% of the vote compared to the ANC’s 32%. The DA, which previously had 15% of the vote in this ward, did not contest.
The DA did not contest in Ward 3 in Cederberg on Wednesday leaving the PA, the ANC and the local Cederberg Eerste party to battle it out.
Meanwhile, the ANC government in KwaZulu-Natal has asked the IEC to postpone all by-elections in the province to June.
