The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania has dumped the new coalition led by Jacob Zuma and Julius Malema and joined the Government of National Unity (GNU).
The party, which is a leading campaigner for the return of land to the black majority, said it wanted to be part of the solution and to influence policy positions.
During the first sitting of Parliament on Friday, the PAC was one of the parties that opposed the unity coalition of the ANC, DA, IFP, PA and Good party.
The so-called Progressive Caucus, which has now been joined by the MK party, is sworn to frustrating President Cyril Ramaphosa’s unity government.
“Our participation in the GNU is rooted in the belief that the PAC can effectively steer the country away from right-leaning tendencies and protect the gains achieved thus far,” said PAC secretary Apa Pooe.
He said they wanted a seat on the table where land restitution would be discussed.
“The PAC firmly believes that land restitution is not just a policy issue but a fundamental right and a cornerstone of true liberation. We will advocate for comprehensive land restitution that addresses historical injustices and empowers the dispossessed.”
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the decision of the PAC served to dispel the myth that the GNU was just a coalition of the ANC and the DA.
