Mikel Arteta’s side may be flying high at the top of the Premier League table but it seems his men are failing to keep their heads.
The team is facing two charges that came in quick succession from the English Football Association (FA): for failing to control their players on the pitch.
The most recent charge came as a result of the Gunners’ third round FA Cup tie away to Oxford United on 9 January.
Arsenal won the game 3-0 but were charged for their protests in the first half. They believed they deserved a penalty as a result of Elliott Moore handling the ball unfairly. The referee said no, but the players continued to protest.
The FA have stated that Arsenal players forcefully tried to get the referee to overturn his decision, but according to GOAL, Arteta’s side have filed an appeal against the charge.
In their appeal, Arsenal have stated that the referee did not mention anything regarding the protests in his match report. Reports further add that the appeal cites examples of similar incidents in other games that have gone unnoticed this season.
The charge was the second in a matter of days for the North London club, with a sanction and £40,000 (R800,000) fine going their way for similar behaviour during their home draw with Newcastle United on 3 January when they were denied a penalty.
