Three police officers and one ADT security guard have been shot and hospitalised by a gang of 15 suspects at a filling station on Andrew Mapheto Drive, South Tembisa.

The gang was in the shop at the Sasol garage when police officers walked in to buy coffee and food in the early hours of Thursday morning.

When the suspects realised that the three people were police officers they opened fire.

One officer who was shot in the head was airlifted to the hospital while the other two were rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

According to sources at the garage, the robbery was already in progress when approximately 15 suspects started shooting at the police officers and ADT members.

Police found eight rifle cartridges and nine 9mm cartridges at the scene. It appears that police were also shot in the vehicle as four 9mm cartridges were found in the unmarked Nissan NP 300 state vehicle.

All three officers were disarmed of their 9mm service pistols. The security guard’s 9mm Glock was also taken.

Witnesses said the garage was robbed of cigarettes and cash.

The suspects fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum and a Toyota Corolla Prestige.

Video footage was available with the suspects’ faces covered. Police are investigating cases of armed robbery and attempted murder.

There have not been arrests as yet.
