An off-duty police officer is fighting for his life after five armed men shot him multiple times and robbed him in Jane Furse, Limpopo.

The Burgersfort-based officer was sitting in his white Toyota Hilux at Mashishing village on Tuesday when the gang attacked him.

“They shot him in his upper body. When he tried to get out of his vehicle to defend himself, they shot him several more times in his lower body and left him unconscious,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.

The robbers took the officer’s service firearm and two cellphones before fleeing. A passerby who saw the attack called the police and paramedics.

Police found two empty bullet casings at the scene. The wounded officer was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Limpopo’s police boss Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has promised to catch the attackers. She has put her best officers on the case and asked the public to help find the suspects.

“We will use all our resources to track down these criminals and make them face the full might of the law,” said Hadebe.
