- Petrol 95 rises R3.33 a litre to R30.25 in Gauteng, and petrol 93 rises R3.12 to R29.88, from 7 October.
- Diesel goes up by R2.84 or R3.24 a litre depending on the grade, and paraffin by R3.58 wholesale, the department says.
From midnight on Wednesday, 7 October, 95 unleaded petrol will cost R30.25 a litre in Gauteng. It is the first time the price has passed R30.
The Central Energy Fund, on behalf of the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, announced the increases on Monday. Petrol 95 goes up R3.33 a litre, from R26.92. Petrol 93 goes up R3.12, to R29.88. Diesel goes up R2.84 a litre for 0.05% sulphur and R3.24 for 0.005% sulphur. Illuminating paraffin, which many households use for cooking and lighting, goes up R3.58 a litre at wholesale level. Its maximum retail price rises R4.77, to R31.82 a litre.
For a driver filling a 50-litre tank with 95 petrol, that is about R166 more. A full tank will cost around R1,512 instead of R1,346.
The fund says average international prices for petrol, diesel and paraffin rose between 28 August and 1 October. The department said the average price of Brent crude oil rose from $87.89 to $101 a barrel over that period. South Africa buys its fuel at dollar prices.
Part of the rise also goes to a levy that repays a shortfall in the state’s fuel account. The slate levy goes up to 87.66 cents a litre, from 83.28 cents. At the end of August the account was R10.456 billion short.
This follows September’s increase of R1.34 a litre for both grades of petrol and up to R3.15 a litre for diesel.
