Nyiko Masango, or Mr Dynamix as he is affectionately called, is known far and wide for his adventures with his camera.
Born and bred in Nkowankowa Township in Limpopo, Masango’s love for photography started from his teenage years.
He believes in the old saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words”.
In a conversation with Scrolla.Africa he said that he loves landscape and capturing images and he would borrow a camera from his cousins when he went on school trips.
He later saved up enough money to buy his own camera.
“I started with a camera which used film, then a digital one, to a DSLR (a type of digital camera), and now a phone. I now do phone photography because for me it is the easiest form, as you don’t have to deal with heavy equipment when going to events,” he said.
Masango explained that if you have a good phone with a quality camera, you can take excellent pictures – but it’s not a necessity.
“An average phone can take good images if you know how to frame and compose your pictures,” he said.
He has captured the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro in 2019 and set a new South African record as he did so, climbing Africa’s highest mountain in just 12 hours.
A week before the climb, he cycled over 3400 kilometres from Tzaneen to Tanzania, advocating for the rights of fathers to have greater access to their children.
And now every year Masango leads a 100km walk from Polokwane to Tzaneen to encourage active parenting through his initiative “Presence to Fatherhood.”
In October he added to his accomplishments by reaching three summits of South Africa’s highest mountains in just seven days: the Mafadi Peak at 3540m above sea level; DeBerg at 2330m; and Iron Crown in Haenertsburg in the Wolkberg Mountains at 2120m.
