DJ Sbu wants no smoke with Ntsiki Mazwai after a radio joke sparked a social media clash between the two personalities.
The radio presenter, whose real name is Sbusiso Leope, has played down the disagreement after Mazwai accused him of creating the impression that she was drunk.
Mazwai said she does not drink and was unhappy about the comments made while DJ Sbu was discussing her on Radio 2000.
“Dear Radio 2000, I do not appreciate DJ Sbu telling the nation I’m drunk (when I don’t even drink),” Mazwai wrote on social media.
She said she wanted to correct the impression because she believed comments about her drinking could harm her reputation.
The disagreement followed a Women’s Day post from Mazwai in which she shared sexual advice aimed at younger women.
DJ Sbu discussed the post on his radio show and joked that Mazwai may have been enjoying “Autumn Harvest”, referring to a popular wine.
Mazwai did not see the funny side.
She objected publicly and made it clear that she did not want comments made about her that could leave listeners believing she had been drinking.
DJ Sbu later tried to cool things down.
“I love Ntsiki man, come on. Sis Ntsiki, what happened now?” he said.
He then made his position even clearer.
“I don’t want no smoke.”
Mazwai is no stranger to speaking her mind publicly.
The poet, musician, podcaster and social commentator has built a reputation for expressing strong views on social and political issues.
She is also moving deeper into politics as the Land Party’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate.
Her outspoken social media presence has previously landed her in other public disputes.
In January 2023, Mazwai faced criticism from transgender and gender diverse organisations over a social media post about transgender rights and women’s rights.
The organisations called on her to remove the post and apologise.
Mazwai later deleted it.
“Guys I have deleted the offending tweet …..because when someone says something you have put up, hurts their feelings…..the right thing to do, is to take it down,” she wrote at the time.
She was also involved in a long running public dispute with musician DJ Euphonik, whose real name is Themba Nkosi.
In 2025, Mazwai rejected a report claiming she had apologised to Euphonik over their legal battle.
She said the report was wrong and maintained that no court had ordered her to apologise.
Their legal dispute goes back to March 2022, when the Johannesburg High Court granted an interdict preventing Mazwai from making certain statements about Euphonik on social media and ordered her to pay legal costs.
Mazwai later insisted she was complying with the court order but rejected claims that she owed Euphonik an apology.
“Should there ever be an apology, you will get it directly from me via video when I know I’ve done something wrong,” she said.
Away from her public battles, Mazwai has built a career across poetry, music and media.
She rose to prominence through the Feela Sista Poetry Collective and has released projects including Ma Miya, Ndingubani and The Masterpiece.
She has also worked on podcasts and other media projects.
DJ Sbu has had a long career of his own as a radio personality, musician and businessman.
He has worked at stations including YFM, Metro FM and Ukhozi FM, co-founded TS Records and founded the MoFaya energy drink brand.
Their latest disagreement may have provided another fiery social media moment, but DJ Sbu appears determined not to let it grow into a bigger celebrity feud.
His message to Mazwai is simple: he does not want a fight.
