Now or never for Pitso

By Razeen Gutta

A win for Pitso Mosimane’s Abha Club on Monday will see them avoid relegation from the Saudi Pro League.

On Monday night football this week, the celebrated South African coach will face one of his biggest tests yet as his side take on bottom-placed Al Hazm away from home.

Last week’s 2-1 win over Al Khaleej helped Abha out of the relegation zone, but a win this week will see them safe.

A draw would see Abha relying on other results to avoid the drop, with Al Riyadh, Al Tai and Al Akhdoud the other teams whose safety in the top tier is threatened.

Despite scoring the most goals of the bottom five clubs, Abha has been heavily let down by their backline this season.

Mosimane’s side have conceded 85 goals across their 33 matches so far, the worst defensive record in the league.

Another worry for the manager will be his team’s poor away form, with their last victory on the road coming in December 2022.

A stalemate could be enough, but only if the two teams below them, Al Tai and Al Akhdoud, also draw when they face off at the same time.

The matches kick off at 8pm on Monday.
