The year 2022 belongs to musician Nomfundo Moh.
Earlier this year she released her debut album Amagama with hit songs like “Soft Life” and “Phakade Lami”, which became double platinum within a few months.
When she walked across the stage at the University of KZN to collect her Bachelor of Social Work degree in May, “Soft Life” was playing in the background.
Best of all, on Sunday, the 22-year-old songstress, whose real name is Nomfundo Ngcobo, walked away with Best Afropop Album at the South African Music Awards (Samas).
And this is only the first year of her professional music career.
She was nominated in four categories: Music Video of the Year, Record of the Year, Tiktok Viral Song of the Year and a Best Afropop Album, for Amagama.
She considers her win the biggest pat on the back.
“This is about being recognised by the very industry that I am part of. It means that I am doing something right and I am excited about this,” she said.
She told Scrolla.Africa, “It was a moment filled with tears of joy. The category had powerful nominees so bagging the award is a big deal!”
She added, “I would like to thank my MohFam (fans) for all the love and support. May we stay as one family and grow together.”
Coming from the small town of Ndwedwe in KwaZulu-Natal, she grew up in a musical family where everyone could sing, including her mother, father, and even her grandfather.
“It’s actually so funny how we sing for everything back at home,” she said.
She said that she doesn’t get to spend much time with her family.
“I had to see my family for only a few hours and dedicate most of my time to my craft – recording music. There’s hardly time to relax and hang out, but I am content with the fruits of hard work.”
