- Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital has been unable to wash patient bedding for a month because of broken machines.
- Staff blame the new CEO’s lack of experience and qualifications.
Patients at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital can’t get clean sheets because the laundry machines haven’t worked for a month.
“Some operations have been cancelled as unwashed laundry piles up at the hospital laundry,” says DA shadow MEC for health Jack Bloom.
While other Gauteng hospitals send dirty linen to the Dunswart laundry, Bara does its own washing. Dunswart is trying to help but can’t handle all of Bara’s laundry.
Bloom says staff blame new CEO Dr Nthabiseng Makgana, who they say is often away and can’t run the hospital properly.
“According to Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, there were problems with her appointment. She has less than 10 years’ senior management experience and doesn’t have the required master’s degree,” Bloom said.
He warns that unwashed beds could cause infections. The DA wants Dr Makgana replaced by someone who can manage the hospital’s R4-million budget and 6,000 workers.
