- The SACP plans to contest the 2026 local elections on its own, putting more pressure on the alliance with the ANC.
- The ANC refuses to form a coalition with the EFF or uMkhonto Wesizwe, despite SACP and Cosatu objections to the DA.
Leaders of the ANC and SA Communist Party met again this week in a bid to save their crumbling political alliance.
But tensions remain high after the SACP decided to contest the 2026 local government elections without its long-time ally.
This move is a direct challenge to the ruling ANC, and puts the future of the tripartite alliance with trade union federation Cosatu and the South African National Civic Organisation in doubt.
ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula confirmed that the meeting was held at Luthuli House in central Johannesburg on Monday.
He said it was part of “ongoing efforts to consolidate unity of purpose” and “strengthen the shared commitment of the alliance to defend our democracy”.
But despite these claims, the parties remain divided.
The communists blame the ANC for ignoring advice from both the party and Cosatu. They had warned it not to include the DA in the government of national unity.
Instead, they argued the party should have joined forces with the EFF and uMkhonto Wesizwe, who they say share more values with theM.
They argue that the DA is against land reform, black economic empowerment, and the National Health Insurance.
The SACP has also accused the ANC of pushing liberal policies and failing to consult alliance partners on major decisions.
The party’s plan to run in 2026 has also caused a split within Cosatu. Some members back the move, while others want to stay loyal to the ANC.
To change the decision, the SACP would need to call a special national conference.
Leaders are racing to sort out their differences before South Africa heads into another heated election season.
