Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s convoy was attacked by gunmen in his home state of Katsina over the weekend.
Presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu confirmed that two people were injured during the attack in the advance convoy of security guards, protocol and media officers.
The attackers were repelled by the military, the presidency said.
The convoy was attacked over the weekend when the president took a trip to Daura to celebrate the Muslim festival, Eid-ul-Adha.
“The attackers opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the military, police and DSS personnel accompanying the convoy,” Shehu said.
“Two persons in the convoy are receiving treatment for the minor injuries. All other personnel, staff and vehicles made it safely to Daura.”
Katsina is one of the states in north-west Nigeria affected by criminal activities which has where several people have been killed and thousands kidnapped since 2015.
Police in the area confirmed the force were attacked in a terrorist ambush on the same day that saw two officers killed.
Sokoto, Zamfara and Kaduna, along with Katsina are some of the many states that have suffered from similar attacks.
