Neymar helped Dani Alves by giving him €150,000 (R3-million) to pay the fine in his rape case.
Neymar and Alves have played together at Barcelona, Paris-Saint Germain and Brazil.
This financial help was considered a factor in reducing Alves’s sentence to four and a half years for the rape conviction.
Neymar is said to have given Alves the money because he could not afford to pay the fine himself.
The incident occurred at a nightclub in Spain, with Alves initially facing up to 12 years in prison as requested by the victim’s legal team.
The payment, ordered to the victim as compensation for moral damages and injuries, reportedly had a major impact on the outcome of the sentencing.
Neymar is said to have provided legal support to Alves through Gustavo Xisto, a well-known lawyer associated with Neymar’s father.
Alves, who has spent over a year in pre-trial detention, claimed his innocence throughout the trial, claiming the sexual encounter was consensual.
However, the court’s judgment detailed the violent circumstances of the assault, emphasising that prior intimacy did not mean consent to the following actions that led to the rape conviction.
In addition to the prison sentence and compensation payment, Alves faces five years of parole and a nine-and-a-half-year restraining order against contacting the victim.
