Music legend Rebecca Malope has been named as one of the recipients of the prestigious National Order Award, which is given to citizens who have worked towards the advancement of democracy and have significantly improved the lives of South Africans.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the list of those who will receive the awards on 18 November.
The awards will be handed to individuals in the fields of arts, sports, culture, literature, music and journalism.
The award also identifies those who have aimed towards developing a non-racial, democratic and non-sexist society as envisioned in the South African constitution.
Malope is receiving the award bestowed in Silver for her contribution to South African music as her unique voice brings happiness to many across the country with expressive gospel sounds.
Over 30 individuals are set to receive their awards and some will be honoured posthumously.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa will bestow on deserving recipients the Order of Mendi for Bravery, the Order of Ikhamanga, the Order of the Baobab, the Order of Luthuli and the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo,” said Chancellor of the National Orders and Director-General in the Presidency Phindile Baleni.
The award has been handed out annually since its establishment in 2003.
