Mzansi celebs honoured by fake university

South African celebrities Winnie Mashaba, Elizabeth Serunye, and Sello Maake kaNcube were honoured by an institution called Trinity International Bible University, which has been exposed as “fake”.

The Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, stated that this university is not registered and cannot issue any qualifications.

Despite this, the South African actor and TV personality Sello Maake kaNcube celebrated his honorary doctorate.

“Look at God! It’s now Dr Sello Maake kaNcubeSomeone. Please tell my co-pilot Pearl Mbewe Maake KaNcube @Solopearl and wife that she is no longer travelling this life journey with a national treasure only but with an honourable doctor!” Sello wrote on X.

The other entertainers had been recognised by the same university in previous years, drawing criticism from the minister regarding the unregistered institution.

Department of Higher Education spokesperson Veli Mbele confirmed the university is not registered.

“According to our records as the department of higher education and training, Trinity International Bible University is not a registered private higher education institution,” said Veli Mbele, the department’s spokesperson.

He said Trinity is therefore not authorised to offer any qualifications, including honorary degrees.

“We also wish to state that the department has written to them before and warned them about continuing to operate illegally and for them to regularise their operations.”
