Muvhango cast downs scripts — again!

By Linda Ximba

For the second time in three months, Muvhango actors have stopped working.

Scrolla.Africa understands that the cast of the popular SABC2 Tshivenda drama series was called to a meeting on Tuesday last week where they were told they would not be receiving their January salaries.

“To our shock, we were told that the production company [Word of Mouth Pictures] has money issues,” said a source, who asked not to be identified fearing victimisation.

“Once again they blamed the SABC for the money delay meaning we won’t be paid. What they are doing to us is horrible. We work hard to ensure the soapie has a high viewership yet they treat us like dirt.”

Another source said they decided to pack their stuff and leave the set.

“We told them we will come back once we have received payment notifications,” said the source.

“So if you go to the SABC studios now, you will probably find the producers twiddling their thumbs.”

Failure by the production company to honour their salary agreements is not new. It happened in November — leaving the cast and supporting staff in disarray.

While Muvhango Executive Director Duma Ka Ndlovu did not reply to our query, SABC Acting Group Executive Corporate Affairs and Marketing Mmoni Seapolelo confirmed there were payment issues but said they were handling them internally.
