A combination of typically modern instruments combined with the traditional Maskandi guitar strings and followed by a distinct sounding voice singing in a pattern resembling that of a war cry.
The above is at least a brief description of what the latest single by Bhovodlamasaladi and duo Mega Smash sounds like. Except it’s not just any war cry, but it is their sword in the battlefield against depression and suicide among young people.
“The song is about a young man’s first heartbreak that has him contemplating suicide,” said Bhovodlamasaladi, who is also a published author and director.
“The inspiration for the song comes from the awareness that young men suffer more as they are expected to be strong against life’s challenges.”
Bhovodlamasaladi, whose real name is Zwelibanzi Sibiya, told Scrolla.Africa that the drama and storytelling which lights up his songs were inspired by what he learned in his dramatic arts course at the University of Witwatersrand.
Tankiso, who is known as “TK” and his brother Mike Mokoena from Heidelberg in Gauteng form Mega Smash. They drew their musical inspiration from the legendary Ringo Madlingozi and Vusi Nova.
