Music of black origins honoured

Britain’s Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards have become a big deal every year to honour artists performing in hip hop, grime, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz and African gospel.

This year’s biggest winner was the rapper Nines, who was adjudged the best hip hop act and also won for best album with Crabs in a Bucket.

Also taking home trophies was the singer Mahalia, who won the best female act and the best R&B/soul act. She is also nominated for the 2021 Grammys.

The best male act was the rapper Headie One while movie director Steve McQueen got the inspiration award.

Nigerian singer Wizkid won for the best African act.

Some of Nigeria’s biggest stars, including Burna Boy and Davido, appeared at the virtual event. Tiwa Savage gave a particularly powerful performance singing ‘Who gave the order?’ about the Nigerian military gunning down unarmed protestors during the “EndSars” protests.
