Police think a jealous lover might be behind Tuesday night’s shooting that killed five men in Gqeberha, but Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha suspects drugs played a role.

“The police must still complete their investigation, but issues of jealousy and drugs can’t be ruled out,” he said.

The shooter opened fire on five men who were allegedly smoking drugs in a shack at Chris Hani informal settlement in New Brighton.

One victim’s girlfriend confirmed her partner sold drugs.

“He was selling drugs to put food on the table. He never hurt anyone. These were his closest friends, and they were smoking as they usually do here,” she said.

Police killed the suspect on Wednesday when they caught him allegedly about to commit another murder nearby.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said: “As operational members were about to enter the house, a man who was in possession of a firearm was about to shoot, and members opened fire.”

The suspect died at the scene from upper body gunshot wounds.

His mother, Zukelwa Booi, was relieved at her son’s death. She admitted her son used drugs.

“We were all so scared of him in this house. He would get very violent and aggressive.”

The violence continues across the Eastern Cape. In September, 18 people were killed in Lusikisiki.

Days later, six died in Qumbu. Last Tuesday, a father, son and nephew were killed in the northern areas.

Last weekend brought more tragedy when five family members were killed and two wounded in Bhityi.
