Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates have taken control of their MTN8 semi-final ties after both secured crucial 1-0 away wins in the first-leg matches this weekend.
Abafana Bes’thende delivered the biggest shock at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday, where Sede Junior Dion’s first-half strike stunned Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Ivorian finished clinically in the 38th minute after a perfectly weighted pass from Khulekani Shezi split the Sundowns defence.
Sundowns dominated possession and created chances. With Cassius Mailula setting up Lebo Mothiba early on, but Arrows goalkeeper Edward Maova – and later his replacement Thakasani Mbanjwa after Maova was injured – produced key saves to keep the Brazilians at bay.
Kegan Johannes twice went close with headers late on.
On Saturday, Orlando Pirates edged Sekhukhune United 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium to keep their bid for a fifth successive MTN8 title on track.
The tight encounter was settled by Deon Hotto’s powerful finish two minutes before half-time, after Ghampani Lungu’s clever flick put him clear on the left side of the box.
Babina Noko threatened through substitute Thabo Nkwana, while Pirates debutant Sebastian Pedersen missed a late chance to double the lead.
Both second legs will be played next weekend.
