Customers at Mthatha Airport on Saturday were frustrated after firefighters downed tools over an overtime claim dispute.
Flights that were scheduled to land at the airport had to be redirected to the King Phalo Airport in East London.
Eastern Cape transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the department had made arrangements to avoid further disruptions on Sunday.
“Mthatha Airport is fully operational,” provincial transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said on Sunday morning.
“That’s despite the illegal action by firefighters there.
“We’ve made arrangements, roping in services from the municipality.
“So we’re all operational, while attending to the internal challenges we’re faced with,” he said.
Binqose added that the 2pm flight scheduled for Sunday will land and take off without any disruptions.
“It necessitated that we make arrangements today to avoid a recurrence of disruptions,” he said.
A representative of the striking firefighters could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.
