  • Mpumalanga education head Lucy Moyane gets a written warning over a two million rand laptop tender.
  • The province recovers most of the money paid for overpriced laptops that failed tender rules.

Mpumalanga’s education head of department, Lucy Moyane, will return to work on 19 January after being given a written warning.

The warning follows her role in a controversial two million rand laptop deal that caused outrage last year.

Moyane was found guilty of negligence after approving a recommendation that led to the purchase of 22 laptops at inflated prices.

A forensic investigation later found that the laptops were overpriced and did not meet tender requirements.

Moyane was placed on precautionary suspension while the investigation was under way.

Provincial government spokesperson George Mthethwa confirmed that the disciplinary process has now ended.

“The matter has been fully concluded,” he said.

Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu welcomed the outcome and said most of the money has already been recovered.

He said more than 80 percent of the R855,712 paid to the service provider has been returned.

The remaining R170,000 is expected to be paid back by the end of January.

“The recovery of the money is a positive step,” Ndlovu said. “But we must make sure the full amount is recovered.”

Six officials were linked to the laptop deal.

One resigned, one had charges dropped, three are still facing disciplinary hearings, and one case has been paused because of ongoing court action.

Lifestyle audits were also done on the officials and found no suspicious activity.
