Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has said he wanted Pitso Mosimane to coach Bafana Bafana and he is even willing to subsidise his salary.
The pair worked together for several years at Mamelodi Sundowns, the club Motsepe owns, and he believes that Mosimane could bring success to the South African national team.
“I wish Pitso Mosimane could coach Bafana Bafana,” Motsepe told journalists at a South African National Editors’ Forum event on Saturday, as per Sunday World.
“He is my favourite coach. I love him. He will always have a special place in my heart and I will even get the Motsepe Foundation to subsidise his salary. I think he is quality, and quality should not come cheap.”
Mosimane earned 11 major titles during his time with Sundowns before moving to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
The 57-year-old is without a club after leaving his role with Ahly.
Mosimane, arguably the best African manager, has managed Bafana Bafana in the past.
He took over in July 2010 after serving as an assistant manager to Joel Santana and Carlos Parreira during the World Cup.
Mosimane however only lasted two years at the helm after failing to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Bafana mistakenly played for a draw against Sierra Leone when they required all three points to qualify.
While Mosimane was tipped to return to South Africa, that now no longer looks likely after Orlando Pirates appointed Jose Riveiro as their new coach.
A move to Qatar or the United Arab Emirates seems the most likely for the decorated Mosimane.
