When a 78-year-old woman in China asked for directions from a street cleaner she didn’t anticipate seeing her daughter for the first time in 24 years.
But the chance encounter in the small Chinese city of Sichuan reunited a mother with her daughter whom she had not seen since 1998.
The mother, Cai Youxiu, had been working with the police to help her find her daughter, Hu Hun – but the two met by chance instead.
“I was cleaning in front of a school entrance when an old lady came to ask me for directions and I immediately recognised her to be my mother,” Hu, 46, told The Cover.
“I was so excited, but she didn’t recognise me even after I called her, Mom.”
The older woman was initially sceptical and even phoned the police to confirm that the woman she asked directions from was in fact her daughter.
The daughter is said to have lost contact with her family after moving to a different province in 1999 to seek employment.
Hu was unable to contact her home after she lost the paper that had her home’s contact details, according to Red Star.
The daughter faced even more difficulties contacting home after her family were forced to move out to make way for a power station.
“I sent them letters but they were all returned because the old address was invalid,” Hu explained.
“I’ve lost too much time with my mother. I vow to spend as much time as I can with her from now on.”
