Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has signed a two-year contract extension.
“Al Ahly SC announce the extension of Pitso Mosimane’s contract for two more years after what he achieved at the club,” a statement from the club said.
Mosimane said the best of the Red Devils is yet to come.
He thanked club chairman Mohmoud El Matip for believing in him.
“The contract extension he gave with his board shows that they still believe we can achieve more in the future,” said Mosimane.
Reports suggest that Mosimane is set to earn around R2.5 million per year under his new contract.
El-Matip stood by the 57-year-old manager when critics poured in just months after he joined the club from Mamelodi Sundowns in September 2020.
Former club players and some of the fans were not convinced by his tactics in spite of winning three trophies in his first season.
“I also thank the club staff and the fans who are always behind the team. The belief and support the fans have is marvellous and I really appreciate them. I promise them and the club management that the best is yet to come,” he said.
Tuesday’s league win saw Al Ahly leapfrog Pyramids, who are now in second, taking a two-point lead with a game in hand.
The result will surely give Mosimane’s lads the moral boost they seek ahead of the trip to South Africa.
On Saturday the Red Devils will take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League Group A second leg match in Tshwane. This is a grudge match after Downs beat Al Ahly 1-0 in Cario two weeks ago.
Since that defeat, Ahly have since won two league games and one of the Champions League against Al-Merrikh. That result took them back on track for the knockout stages.
The trip back to Tshwane, however, will be an emotional one for Mosimane after what happened last time.
Mosimane received a bad reception from Downs fans who insulted him on his way to Loftus Stadium last season in the quarter-final match of the same competition.
