Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena has brushed aside speculation linking him with interest from two North African clubs.
Reports have emerged recently suggesting Mokwena is a wanted man in the north of Africa following Sundowns’ incredible run in the Premier Soccer League and CAF Champions League.
Ten-time African champions Al Ahly and Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca have been reported as eyeing the services of the youthful Masandawana trainer.
The 36-year-old has moved in to dismiss the rumours while pledging his allegiance to the Brazilians.
“I’m here and I want to be here for as much as I can and as much as the club wants me. I’m here,” Mokwena told the media.
“I’m loyal, I try to be as honest as I possibly can in my day-to-day life. I try to serve this club and as long as they appreciate me here and show that they still want me here. Mamelodi Sundowns has done that since I’ve taken over.”
Mokwena’s former boss Pitso Mosimane remains the only South African to coach in North Africa when he accepted the Al Ahly job before a trophy-laden short stint.
Mosimane dumped Sundowns just as the Brazilians were set for the 2020/21 season, having already concluded player transfer business.
But Mokwena says nothing inspires him to jump ship and abandon a club that elevated him to the head coach role last October.
“They have supported me and given me everything. I have got no reason to turn my back on this football club,” said Mokwena.
Interestingly, after the Al Ahly rumours surfaced, Mokwena guided Sundowns to a 5-2 hammering of the Cairo giants in last weekend’s Champions League tie.
It is also not the first time for Moroccan side Wydad to be linked with a South African coach after they were previously reported to be keen on Mosimane.
