In one of the biggest victories for uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) in eThekwini, the Jacob Zuma-led party won the prized Ward 46 in KwaMashu township.
The ward is where former minister Jeff Radebe, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s brother-in-law, grew up and went to school after his family had been moved there by the apartheid government.
In the voting station at Dukemini Primary School, where Radebe went to school, MK received 1,381 votes, while the ANC received 299.
At the Bhekuzulu voting station inside KwaMashu Hostel, an IFP stronghold, MK received 980 votes, while the ANC received only 84. The IFP received 963 votes.
At the Scouts Hall voting station, MK won 1,298 votes, while the ANC got only 221 votes. The EFF got 89 votes.
The contest for Ward 46 started in December last year when former president Zuma announced he would back the party.
Immediately after that announcement, former combatants of the ANC’s former armed wing started recruiting for the new party.
The party’s campaign was led by former MK combatants who worked with Zuma in Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola and elsewhere during the fight against apartheid.
