Expelled founder of the Umkhonto Wesizwe party, Jabulani Khumalo, is still hoping to broker a peace with Jacob Zuma.

Zuma used Khumalo to register the party, then accused him of trying to sabotage it before expelling him from the organisation.

Khumalo was at the launch of the IEC results centre in Midrand where he told the media that he was there in his capacity as a leader of the MK party.

He said fighting among politicians was normal but was often resolved through dialogue.

“Fighting in every organisation is fighting, but as the leadership we sit and we talk.”

Asked whether he has spoken to the leadership that kicked him out of the party, Khumalo said: “We speak all the time when we need to speak.”

He insisted that he was still a member and leader of the party, despite a letter received by the IEC saying Zuma had replaced Khumalo as the leader of the MK.

Khumalo described Zuma as being the face of the party. “I am here standing as leader of the MK,” said Khumalo, who still appears as number two on the MK list.

Khumalo and four other leaders have been accused of spying for the ANC with a view to sharing MK party strategies with the ruling party.

He rejected this accusation, saying no MK members were working with the ANC.

Mntungwa, as he is affectionately known, is contesting his expulsion, saying no formal disciplinary hearing was afforded to him and others.

Khumalo’s name has not been removed from the MK list of candidates for Parliament that were submitted to the IEC by the Zuma party.
