- Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s contract is ending after five years, and only the national commissioner can decide whether he stays or goes.
- Julius Malema and other politicians are backing Mkhwanazi, praising his efforts against criminals in KwaZulu-Natal.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has made it clear that he has no power to decide on the future of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Mchunu spoke to journalists on Sunday in Estcourt. He said the only person who can make that decision is National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
“It is not in my power to decide on the contract of Mkhwanazi, whether it should be renewed or not. That decision lies with the national commissioner,” Mchunu said.
Mkhwanazi’s five-year term as police commissioner is coming to an end. He has built a strong reputation in the province, especially for his tough stance against criminals.
His leadership has earned him public praise, and several politicians are fighting to keep him in the role.
Among his supporters is Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema. Speaking in uMlazi, Durban, on Monday, Malema said they stand behind Mkhwanazi.
“We love Mkhwanazi and we want him to make KwaZulu-Natal a better place,” said Malema.
Mkhwanazi once served as acting national police commissioner after Bheki Cele was suspended.
He also played a key role in calming tensions in KwaZulu-Natal during the unrest that followed the arrest of former president Jacob Zuma.
