An ANC veteran in KwaZulu-Natal has warned the party against forming a coalition with the DA.
Willies Mchunu, who served as the province’s premier between 2016 and 2019, said a coalition with the DA would help it defeat the ANC.
Mchunu’s open letter was written before the ANC national executive committee met on Thursday and decided that a national unity government should be formed.
Since then, the EFF has announced that it would not join a government of national unity with the DA and Freedom Front Plus, leaving the ANC with the option to form a government with the DA and the IFP.
Mchunu is worried about that.
“Please forgive me then, comrades, when I interpret the DA’s stated objective in going into coalition with the ANC as one of the old tricks of imperialism, of divide and rule.
“For them, they clearly now see their long-stated objective of destroying the ANC, or of dividing it between the pro-liberalism and communist-minded, being in sight,” Mchunu said.
Regarding Zuma and his Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party, Mchunu said he had long worried that Zuma would take significant support from the ANC in the 29 May elections.
“When former president Zuma announced that he was no longer going to vote for the ANC, but was going to vote for the then unknown MK Party, I was one of those who felt it necessary that he be engaged by the leadership of the ANC and his concerns be addressed.
‘Inability to reach those who are in leadership in our province rendered my views, which were shared by other comrades, unable to be properly expressed within the structures of the ANC.
“But having worked closely with former president Zuma in the past caused me and others to be concerned and fear that we may not be able to withstand the support he may garner as a seasoned, but also charismatic, politician,” Mchunu added.
