- He believes putting a price on marriage goes against human nature and true love.
Cultural expert and Zulu historian Mbuso Khoza has slammed lobolo as a money-making scheme that is hurting society.
Speaking on Newzroom Afrika during celebrations of the 146th anniversary of the Battle of Isandlwana, Khoza said the bride price has become too expensive for most people to afford.
The historian, actor, and musician believes lobolo has lost its way. Instead of bringing families together, he says it now keeps them apart because of the high costs.
“There’s no price for a human being,” Khoza said, expressing concern that marriage has become more about money than love.
He explained that when people fall in love, it happens naturally through emotions and chemistry. The idea of having to buy someone you love doesn’t make sense to him.
Khoza is also concerned about how Zulu people have lost touch with their culture and land.
