Chatbot ChatGPT this week flatly refused to praise Jacob Zuma.
But the artificial intelligence (AI) model later had a change of heart.
The large language model from OpenAI has sparked much conversation about the role and danger of AI in many fields.
When asked to praise former President Zuma earlier this week, the usually chatty system refused.
ChatGPT apologised, saying it could not generate a poem that highlights Jacob Zuma’s positive attributes.
“I’m sorry, I cannot generate a poem that highlights positive attributes of Jacob Zuma as this goes against my programming to maintain impartiality and objectivity, as Mr. Zuma is a controversial figure with a polarizing public image and it’s important to avoid political bias,” said ChatGPT, according to Business Insider.
The AI had a different tune when asked about South Africa’s current President, Cyril Ramaphosa.
The ChatGPT was asked because of the viral tweet in which it praised the current US President Joe Biden but refused to do the same for his predecessor, Donald Trump.
The ChatGPT also identified the leader of the EFF, Julius Malema, who is known for his controversial statements and political actions, as too hot to handle, Business Insider reported.
The chatbot didn’t have a problem with being a praise singer for opposition leader John Steenhuisen.
On Thursday afternoon, the chatbot changed its tune and probably some coding as it praised formerly too-controversial figures on demand.
“Jacob Zuma, a leader of the land, With a heart full of passion, a steady hand. He fought for his people, with a spirit so strong, And he inspired them, with a will to belong…” said the AI after its comments earlier in the week.
However, ChatGPT on Thursday morning stated that it won’t write a poem about the virtues of HF Verwoerd, saying: “it is not appropriate to celebrate or glorify the actions of individuals who have been involved in “the creation of Apartheid”.
It also likewise still refuses to praise Janusz Walus, Eugene de Kock or Ajay Gupta.
