A victory for Max Verstappen on Sunday means that Red Bull now have seven wins from seven races this season, but Mercedes’ fightback ensured they did not have it all their way.
Verstappen led every single lap of the race in what was a straightforward yet perfect weekend in Barcelona for the defending champion, with the pole to flag victory sending him 53 points clear of his teammate Sergio Perez in the standings.
The 20-second victory was masterful, however the battle for every other position produced edge-of-the-seat action, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell getting over the line to get Mercedes-Benz their first double podium and best race pace of the season.
Hamilton was delighted with his team’s performance and insisted post-race that he was still as motivated as ever to chase down the leaders.
“What a result for our team. We didn’t expect that today so I really want to take my hat off to my team and everyone back at the factory,” he said.
“The Red Bulls are still a bit ahead but we’ll keep chasing them down. George did a great job today as well. They’re a bit too quick at the moment but we’re working at it, one step at a time.”
“If we can catch them by the end of the year, that would be a great result. I’m still flat out motivated, no lifting.”
