  • Entertainment experts say Uyoncengwa uNyoko has dominated radio charts and united fans across South Africa since its July release.
  • Competition is heating up as top artists like DJ Tira, Babes Wodumo and Professor release new hits ahead of December.

Maskandi artist UMafikizolo’s viral hit Uyoncengwa uNyoko is being called the song that has brought South Africans together – and could become this year’s biggest hit.

The song, which loosely translates to Only Your Mother Will Beg You, has topped radio charts and is being played at weddings, corporate events and parties across the country.

KwaZulu-Natal entertainment guru Sandile Makhoba said social media helped push the song to national fame.

“You can tell the song made waves in music charts, but the dominance of Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s name in public has shifted attention,” he said.

“Now it’s hard to say if it will remain the song of the year. We also have big artists who just released new songs like DJ Tira, Professor and Babes Wodumo – competition is tight.”

Nongoma FM music compiler Welcome Ntombela said Uyoncengwa uNyoko has crossed cultural lines and become a national favourite.

“This song is being played everywhere, even in churches,” he said. “It has united South Africans across races and tribes. The Bhinca Nation, known for its loyalty to Maskandi, is solidly behind it.”

Ntombela added that major SABC radio stations like Ukhozi FM and Umhlobo Wenene FM have embraced the song, helping it reach millions of listeners and break genre barriers.

He also mentioned another rising festive hit, Ngiyaledaba iGoli by Mjolisi featuring Mdumazi, which is growing in popularity ahead of December.
