South African singer Makhadzi from Limpopo has revealed that she borrowed money to attend the 19th annual BET Awards in Los Angeles.
Makhadzi – real name Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona – won the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act award.
In an interview on Podcast and Chill, Makhadzi said she needed a loan to cover her travel expenses.
“For me to travel, I have to go to mashonisas [loan sharks]. They [my team] have to borrow money for me to fly business class because I have to be the superstar I am. Because I believe in myself and my career, I’m like, let me do everything and go there.”
It was reported previously that Makhadzi owed the South African Revenue Service (SARS) R6.6-million, which a tax consultant helped reduce to R2.7-million.
Makhadzi confirmed she is working to repay the debt, which often leaves her with no personal funds, TimesLive reported.
“I’m going through a lot. It’s not a secret. Every money I get monthly I’m paying SARS so I end up not having money for myself,” she said.
Grammy Award-winning South African artist Tyla won the Best New Artist and Best International Act awards.
“I want to dedicate this one to all the African superstars before me. Africa to the world!” she said.
The BET Awards, founded in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network in the US, celebrates and honours black and underrepresented people in the entertainment industry.
