Man returns home 47 years after being sent to the shop to buy rice

Forty-seven years ago, a Kenyan man, James Mwaura, was sent to the shop to buy rice for his family – and then got lost.

This week, he was reunited with his family thanks to social media.

Mwaura, now 70, was 23 when he set out on his epic misadventure.

Instead of getting the rice, he lost his way and found himself in Nairobi without money or a place to stay. When he went to look for his brothers, he discovered they had moved.

According to citizen.digital he hitched a ride to a more rural area where he started a new life, met a woman, got married and settled down. He fathered three children and has four grandchildren.

Years later, scrolling through Facebook, he stumbled upon what looked like a familiar face. It was one of his nephews. He sent a message and they began talking.

The family joyfully reunited on Thursday, July 22 – and they did not ask what he had done with the rice money.
