A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her boyfriend’s best friend after her man passed out during a night of heavy drinking to celebrate the new year.

The incident has traumatised the couple from the Verulam community north of Durban.

Her boyfriend, 32, who cannot be named, told Scrolla.Africa that the suspect, who is on the run, was like a brother to him.

“My head is still spinning. I did not think that he would do something like this to my girlfriend. I’ve learnt a lesson not to trust another human being except myself.”

Recounting the ordeal, he said they had invited the suspect on Friday to celebrate the start of the new year together as they had in previous years.

They bought alcohol and meat and spent the day dancing inside his one-room shack.

“We drank for the entire day. At night I was tired and I jumped into my bed and slept. The two of them continued drinking.”

He said that little did he know that his childhood friend had a sinister motive.

“He raped my woman while sleeping in my bed. I did not hear anything despite being in the same bed.”

He was awoken by the screams of his girlfriend, saying she had been raped by their guest.

“She told me that she felt someone on top of her but thought it was me. When she realised it was not me, she started screaming,” he said.

When he woke up, he said his friend jumped off the bed and pretended to be sleeping on the floor.

He says he left the suspect inside his shack and called for help.

The neighbours rushed to his house but the suspect had already fled.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident.

“The complainant alleged that on 2 January 2021 at midnight, she was sleeping when a known suspect raped her.”

She said a case of rape was opened at Verulam police station and no arrest has been made.
